Personal Training Facts: How to Find the Best Trainer for You

Written by Texas Family Fitness | Thursday, October 25, 2018

It’s a common myth that personal training is only for professional athletes. The profession of personal training exists so that anyone willing to work can be empowered to live a healthier life. Personal training might be just what you need!

Here’s what you need to know about finding a great personal trainer to help you reach your goals.

Understanding What Personal Training Is All About

A personal trainer’s job is to help you identify their goals, create a plan for reaching them, and then to work with you throughout the process. Personal training should be customized and offer you both support and expertise.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Gaining an expert workout plan
  • Getting feedback as you exercise
  • Motivation, accountability and encouragement
  • Reducing your chance of injury
  • Help modifying your workout plan and nutrition to break through plateaus

Signs a Personal Trainer Is a Great Fit for You

Finding the right personal trainer for your goals and styles can be a straightforward process. Start by asking the staff at the gym if they have anyone available or that they would recommend. Then, meet with the trainer.

Look for these 7 signs of a great trainer:

1. They have the qualifications.  There are a host of certifications personal trainers can obtain, like a certification through NASM, ACSM, NESTA, ACE, or other organizations. Ask trainers about their experience and credentials.

2. Their demeanor fits your style.  Not every trainer is a great fit for every client. Consider their demeanor: do they make you feel comfortable? Will their personality challenge you without intimidating you?

3. They love what they do.  Passion is what makes personal training powerful. Ask trainers what they love about their job and why they do what they do.

4. They can prove they get results.
A trainer probably won’t be able to show you another clients’ before and after pictures, but they can tell you stories about successes.  Plus, many trainers have strategies for measuring progress using data- so ask about that.

5. They practice what they preach.
Since trainers usually have multiple clients a day, you can’t expect them to workout with you. However, they should be comfortable with all the gym equipment and be able to talk about what they do to train to reach their own goals.

6. They interact throughout their sessions.
One of the benefits of personal training is having someone there to give you feedback, correct your form, and cheer you. On top of these interactions, you want a trainer who asks thoughtful questions.

7. They give out homework assignments.
Educating clients and empowering them to work out on their own is part of a trainer’s job. Ask trainers if they will provide you with exercises to do on days you work out independently.
